The Hervey Bay Triathlon Club welcomes juniors from age 5.  The focus for kids aged 5 to 12 is on having fun, participating, and learning about the sport of triathlon. We encourage good sportsmanship and volunteering by way of handing out water during the senior races. The kids love doing this and have a lot of fun.

The safety of your kids is our priority at all times. All juniors race on closed roads or at off street locations that are manned by Traffic Control staff or volunteers.  Water safety is provided by the local Surf Life Saving Club. If at any time the water conditions do not appear completely safe, we will cancel a swim leg.

Juniors aged 12 and over, who show an interest in further training and reaching their potential in the sport of Triathlon, may be able to participate in free coaching sessions with our coach Brian Harrington. Brian is a qualified Level 1 coach, Triathlon QLD coach and also a QLD Schools Coach.  He has over 30 years experience and has twice been awarded Triathlon QLD Junior Coach of the Year. Brian has coached many successful junior athletes such as Matt Hauser, Toby Powers, Charlotte Davies, Dylan Smith, just to name a few.

Some of our juniors achievements include 8 National School Triathlon Champions,  Junior Youth Olympics selection,  World Junior Elite Championships, an Australian Junior Series winner, Oceania Champions and plenty of State School Campions.  For more information on junior coaching please contact us.

2024 -2025 Junior U12 duathlon series

Program as follows:

Thank you to all the awesome parents and kids that have contributed to what has been an outstanding addition to the Triathlon Club race calendar.  Please note we'd love to have more members however club membership is not mandatory to race.

Due to multiple event activites at the Sports Precinct and subsequent safety issues we have moved the event to the Aero Space precinct next to Hervey Bay Airport/ further details below.

This is a dedicated race series to allow our U12 juniors to enjoy outdoor activity and get a taste for race conditions.  Purely designed as skill development and exercise, we're sure some competitors will keep track however the race organizers will not be posting results.  Not sure how comfortable your child will be?  We are understanding of this and are happy to support those that decide on the day to spectate and help out as volunteers.  Sometimes it just takes exposure to the other children competing to create that special motivation!

Frequently asked Questions:

Can I have a refund or deferral if my child doesn't compete: As a small team keeping the entry cost very low, unfortunately we'll be unable to defer registrations or refund if unable to compete.

Is there pressure to win?:  The race series has been created to help our juniors develop confidence, learn bike and running skills in a safe environment and to generally get outside and have fun.  Some may keep track of who finished where but the race organizers won't. We will be awarding medallions to those competitors that complete the series and special recognition for the juniors who have engaged with the sport, their peers and invested that little extra to help set up and pack away the race.

Does my child or family member need to be a HBTC member?: Non Triathlon club members are welcome to compete.

Can my child compete in the U12 as a U10:  Any child at a competitive level that does not pose a safety risk within the older group can compete.

What's the youngest age that can enter:  We would suggest a starting age of approximately 5, although some children do blossom early.  Come see us at registration and we're happy to chat, first and foremost safety is our priority.

Is registration hard?: No, follow the link, set up a profile and away you go!  Keep in mind the email address becomes the primary log in for each competitor for future registrations.
